Our History
Brandeis National Committee (BNC)
Founded in 1948 and named for Justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis of the U.S. Supreme Court, Brandeis University is the only nonsectarian, Jewish‑founded university in the country. From its earliest days, the institution has been known for academic excellence and a strong commitment to social justice.
At the time of Brandeis’ founding, eight Boston women—leaders in their communities—were asked to support the new university by expanding its modest library, then housed in a converted horse stable and holding just 2,000 books. Their dedication launched the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee, now known as the Brandeis National Committee (BNC).
Today, BNC continues that legacy with chapters nationwide. Over the years, BNC members have placed over one million books in the Brandeis libraries and supports the university’s scholarships and research. Brandeis University has since grown into one of the youngest yet most respected private research universities, known especially for groundbreaking work in neurodegenerative and age‑related diseases.

Brandeis Phoenix
The Phoenix Chapter was founded in 1950 and is proud to be part of the Brandeis vision. Through our events and special interest study groups, we raise funds that directly strengthen Brandeis University’s Libraries—from expanding book and journal collections to preserving films, enhancing technology, medical research, and supporting student workers.
Thirty-seven years ago a group of members started what has become our annual Book & Author event that now attracts attendees from all over the country and features NYT and award-winning authors.
Most of our members have not attended Brandeis University, yet we are passionate champions of a university that brings together people of all backgrounds and promotes learning, inclusion, and social justice.
Our Mission
Our mission and programs reflect the values on which the University was founded - academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism, philanthropy, and service to the community. Brandeis is a champion of inclusion committed to learning, justice and opportunity for people of every background.

Leadership Team
The Brandeis Phoenix Chapter is powered entirely by dedicated volunteers who bring passion, creativity, and commitment to every program we offer. Our leadership team guides the chapter’s vision, oversees our events and Interest Groups, and ensures that the funds we raise make a meaningful impact at Brandeis University.
